History
Wharenui School has a long history . It was established in 1907, to cater for the many families who had moved to the area to be close to the Railway Workshops, which provided work.

The first Principal was Frederick Alley, whose son Rewi journeyed to China where he lived and worked for 60 years until his death in 1987. He is famous in China for his work as a Diplomat, and advocate, but also for his work in improving working and living conditions in China.

Because of this association, the Rewi Alley Chinese Language and Cultural Centre is located on our school grounds.
